Discrimination

A federal government agency employer engages in unlawful discrimination when an individual is subjected to an adverse action or treated less favorably because the person is a member of a lawfully protected class.

Federal law prohibits federal government agencies from discriminating on these bases:

Employees have the right to a reasonable accommodation for a disability, religion or religious practice.

Harassment

Federal government employers may not subject an employee to harassment or a hostile work environment because of the person’s protected status, i.e. sex.

Employment discrimination includes harassment resulting in an adverse employment action against an employee, i.e. discharge, or by subjecting an employee to a hostile and abusive environment, based on an individual’s protected status, i.e. race.

Retaliation

Federal law prohibits retaliatory actions in every phase of the employee-employer relationship.

Federal government employees are protected from their employer’s retaliatory actions because they engaged in protected activity, such as filing a charge of discrimination, or opposing a discriminatory act or serving as a witness in a discrimination investigation.
